Indian Head Massage
This type of Indian head massage, known as Champissage™, was brought to the West by blind bodywork therapist Narendra Mehta in the 1970s and is based on the traditional form of head massage which has been practised in India for more than 1,000 years. A combination of rhythmical and gentle massage of the upper back, shoulders, arms, neck, head and face means it works on physical, mental and subtle levels, targeting areas of the body suffering most stress and tension and balancing the body’s entire energy system. Benefits include relief from chronic neck and shoulder stiffness, dispersal of toxins from tense muscles, relief from headaches, eye strain and jaw ache, improved lymph and blood circulation and more oxygen to the brain. With regular treatments clients describe having much less muscle tension in their shoulders, upper back and neck, and feeling less stressed, more alert, more in control and able to concentrate better. The client sits fully clothed in an upright position and no oil is used in the treatment.
This soothing therapy is a lovely, non-invasive treatment that is thought to be helpful for conditions such as stress, headaches, compacted ear wax, sinus problems and ear disorders. The ‘candles’ are made of cotton flax and impregnated with natural substances including honey extract, which can help to alleviate hay fever; camomile, which has anti-inflammatory properties; St John’s Wort, which is a natural antidepressant; sage, which has a calming effect on the nervous system; and vitamin A, which fights infection and strengthens the immune system. The candles are then sprayed with beeswax, which is a natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, and fights infection. The client lies fully clothed on their side on a massage couch while one end of the candle is gently inserted into one ear. It is lit at the other end and held for about 10 minutes while it burns down to a certain level. This is repeated on the other side. The candling is followed by a deeply calming massage of the face, ears, neck and scalp.

Shiatsu is a powerful hands-on form of bodywork that supports and strengthens the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Shiatsu, which means ‘finger pressure’, originates from Japan and is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine. As well as applying finger pressure, practitioners also use their palms, elbows, knees and feet to soften muscles, mobilise joints and redistribute stuck energy to bring the body back into balance. A deeply relaxing experience, shiatsu incorporates aspects of acupuncture, physiotherapy, yoga and massage and is particularly good for stress-related conditions and maintaining wellbeing. Each treatment takes about 1 hour, which includes a consultation before and after, and about 45 minutes of body work during which the receiver lies on a futon mattress fully clothed. The first session will take longer to include the initial consultation.
The first session will be 15 minutes longer as it includes a medical and lifestyle consultation. Clients then sit in a semi-reclined position on a chair or massage couch. You will be asked to remove your shoes and socks and your feet will be wiped with a refreshing tissue. Organic balm is applied to each foot and the reflex points worked. It is best to wear loose trousers that can be rolled to the knees as the treatment includes a calf massage.
Dating back thousands of years to Ancient Egypt, India and China, reflexology was introduced to the West as “zone therapy” in the early 20th century by Dr William Fitzgerald, an American ear, nose and throat physician. In his research he noted that areas of the feet and hands were linked to systems and organs of the body and that when thumb pressure was applied to the areas, a response occurred in the corresponding body part.
In the 1930s, German physiotherapist Eunice Ingham continued to develop his theory and mapped out the entire body on the foot, creating a holistic therapy that is now widely practised as reflexology.
Reflexology is a deeply relaxing therapy which may help to restore and maintain the body’s natural balance and is thought to be beneficial on a physical, mental and emotional level. After a treatment, clients describe feeling much more relaxed, re-energised, more focused and clear thinking. There are reports that regular treatments may help with stress-related problems, headaches and migraine, sub-fertility issues, sleep disorders, back pain and hormonal imbalances.
